I put the goldenrod in for the butterfly to
have something to grab on to. She flew
away in just 5 hours.
Second butterfly on the next day. After this
they started hatching 2 and 3 a day.
I did have to find food for what ended up as
eleven catapillars. I knew I was not finding all
the eggs laid, and as the cats inside got bigger,
I kept checking my plants outside. I was fortunate
to find 4 more and I brought them in.
In all they were in the house from eggs to flying
about 6 weeks. I forgot to keep track of time.
Only 3 or 4 years ago, we would have so many caterpillars
on the milkweed in my flower bed, that the house was
festooned in chrysalis. And it has gotten less every year.

Oh! Wow! Precious...Tell Mum, the photos of
the flutterfly are really nice, very lovely...
They really are a beautiful creature, and lovely
to see to....the only ones we see, are the Cabbage
White...named for obvious reasons, and quite a
pest really, but there still lovely...!
I'm off to Poole shortly, a bigger town about half
hours distance from me, leaving the car at home,
will jump on the bus at 9.45, and settle down for
a little shopping, and it's market day to...So l might
just spend some money...and the sun's out in 'all'
it's glory, and getting quite warm...!

We always learn the coolest things about nature from this blog. We admire the way you take care of even the smallest creature. The chrysalis is quite pretty methinks, it's a lovely green.
I always find the whole process so fascinating Lynn - good on you for making it easy for them - they are in danger of becoming extinct here because of the paper wasps that eat the caterpillars - their numbers are declining & I find it very sad. I shall think about investing in one of the "tents" that you have this summer ... I have planted lots more swan plants but that doesn't solve the paper wasp issue.

How the new butterflies must feel the need to stretch after their metamorphosis is complete. It's worrying that there are fewer and fewer caterpillars each year.
Flutterbyes are furry impawtant for the environment, Precious. And these ones are furry purrty too!
That is a wonderful thing you did there, helping out nature. With any luck next year will see more of those winged delights.

Hi Precious! Jo Jo and Marv wave wildly! We (Finally) got our Mom to write for us! She has been so furry busy we were worried that she would forget to feed US. You are lucky, not only does your Mom feed Caterpillars but we bet she never forgets your meals! Our Mom has been feeding Lucifer (the black cat across the street). His Peep moved and left him here. Mom and the lady who has the neighborhood cat houses have been trying to catch him so they can take him to get TNR-ed (what ever that means) and Lucifer has evaded them for 2 months now. He has been eating OUR Crunchies and Stinky Goodness (at his trap). We too have noticed there are less butterflies the last couple of years. Mom thought it was because of all the extra hots we have had in the summer and bitter cold in the winter. It has caused all kinds of problems with the bees and the fruit trees too. Good that you guys are taking care of caterpillars. Oh, before we leave, Precious, you look marvelous darling! Keep being happy and healthy! I'll bet Dani would love to snack on moths or butterflies but we don't have any in an enclosed area inside. I know she likes to chase them when outside on a leash, but that doesn't allow for much space to run. I have showed her your pictures, though, and she seems quite interested.XO
